Benfica won 3-1 at Estoril on Saturday, but Sporting Portugal beat Gil Vicente 3-0 to secure second place. The result leaves José Mourinho's side outside the Champions League next season.

According to L'Équipe, Benfica completed a rare unbeaten Liga Portugal campaign, yet 11 draws in 34 matches, including Monday's 2-2 at Braga, consigned them to third.

Sporting Portugal had overtaken their local rivals on matchday 33 and did not slip. Former Marseille player Luis Suarez strengthened his lead in the scoring chart with 28 goals, ahead of Vangelis Pavlidis on 22.

In the relegation fight, Tondela lost 1-3 to Arouca and dropped to the second division. Casa Pia drew 1-1 at home to Rio Ave and will face Torreense, third in D2, in a play-off to try to stay up.

Academico Viseu returned to the top flight for the first time in 37 years after a 0-0 home draw with Sporting Portugal B.
