Finn Azaz created the breakthrough in the 12th minute by setting up the opener, then added a second half finish as Southampton beat Wrexham 5-1.
Azaz dictated early spaces between the lines, slipping the key pass for the first goal (12.). He kept asking for the ball on the half turn, drawing Wrexham's midfield out of shape.
The Saints' playmaker then went close with a driven effort that clipped the upright (76.). Minutes later he arrived in the box to sweep in from Shea Charles' cushioned header (83.), sealing a complete individual performance.
He finished with five attempts, two on target, plus one goal and one assist. Fourteen successful final third passes and two key passes underlined how he connected midfield to attack and kept Wrexham pinned back.
Because the Saints consistently found him between the lines, his timing and weight of pass forced repeated defensive adjustments and ensured control of the game's key phases.
Saints rise from seventh to sixth in the Championship and host Derby next. Wrexham visit Birmingham.
