Real Madrid head into the Spanish Super Cup with a clear challenge on their hands.
The battle for the first title of 2026 arrives without their main attacking reference, as Kylian Mbappe has been ruled out of the semi-final against Atletico Madrid due to a knee sprain.
On the surface, it appears to be a major setback for a side that has relied heavily on the Frenchman’s goals throughout the season.
Judging purely by recent memory, concern is understandable, as, before the Betis encounter, Real Madrid lost the only match Mbappe missed this season, the UEFA Champions League defeat against Manchester City.
That result inevitably raised doubts about how the team would cope without its most decisive player in high-pressure games.
As such, when viewed through a wider lens, the story changes significantly.
Real Madrid’s overall record without Mbappe since his arrival paints a far more reassuring picture.
Over the last 16 months, the club has played 11 matches without the French star, recording seven wins, three draws, and just one defeat.
That sole loss remains the Champions League setback against Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The upcoming clash against Atletico Madrid will mark the first time Mbappe misses two matches against the same opponent in a Real Madrid shirt.
He was already absent from the September 2024 derby at the Metropolitano, which ended in a 1–1 draw in La Liga.
Another reminder came in December, when Mbappe was rested due to physical discomfort as Madrid focused on the Intercontinental Cup final.
That same month, in his absence, the team drew in La Liga, this time a dramatic 3–3 against Rayo Vallecano.
In February, Mbappe missed the Copa del Rey tie against Leganes and in his absence, Real Madrid won 3-2, with Gonzalo Garcia scoring the injury-time winner.
Since then, Madrid, without Mbappe, have secured victories over Real Sociedad, Athletic Club, and Getafe.
At the Club World Cup, illness again sidelined Mbappe, with Gonzalo Garcia starting up front as Madrid drew with Al Hilal and defeated Pachuca and RB Salzburg.
Across the matches where Mbappe has not featured, Real Madrid scored 23 goals, averaging 2.09 per game, while conceding just 11.
The numbers suggest that even without their top scorer, Madrid remain competitive, balanced, and capable of stepping up when silverware is on the line.
