As we all know, Steven Gerrard has returned to the Rangers media world in the past half week, albeit with a lack of club football. Rangers’ former manager was of course speaking to Si Ferry’s Open Goal podcast of late, as Ibrox Noise has indeed covered recently. Our recent topics on the subject of Gerrard’s comments centred initially on his choice of captain as being James Tavernier, and also the fact that Steven Gerrard would consider himself to be a Plan B if Rangers ever approached him again. He hopes very much that does not happen. And the Steven Gerrard Rangers verdict followed.
However, Gerrard has said one categorical thing that Ibrox Noise is very, very happy about, and we are sure our readers and fans at large are too. And that is that Gerrard is a lifelong Rangers fan now and, having adored his time in Govan, considers himself a lifelong member of the Blue Nose family.
Gerrard of course came to Rangers as a bit of a surprise, inspired initially by then sporting director Mark Allen, who suggested the idea to then chairman Dave King. King saw the pound signs of an A lister joining Rangers as manager, even if the man had no experience at the time. It took two and a half years of Rangers being very much runners up under Gerrard before the club clicked onto things and won the title. Rangers 55 in 2021 still to this day remains the most recent league title the club has won.
But what we are thrilled about is his absolute promotion of Derek McInnes. Gerrard is a big McInnes fan and dearly wants to see the former Aberdeen and Hearts coach succeed at Ibrox. In all senses, Gerrard is very much one of us. He is a true Blue Nose, and even though his primary club will of course always be Liverpool, the fact that his second club is almost as close to his heart as the Anfield giants in Rangers suggests that the boy has well and truly had his soul won over by all things Govan.
He wants Derek McInnes to succeed at Rangers. Stevie G wants to see titles and he wants to see success north of the border with his old club. Gerrard very much remains a Blue Nose. He is a member of the Rangers family, and he has always been extremely positive about all things to do with the club.
Rangers approaches to him are a topic for another day, and we will discuss them in due course when the time is right. But the fact that the man, who is primarily a Liverpool supporter and Liverpool icon, is so indoctrinated in all things Rangers is extremely heartening to see, because to this day Steven Gerrard remains one of Britain’s biggest football icons.
There is no question the boy is Hollywood. He is box office and he always will be. And to have him as a true Rangers man through and through, even if he wasn’t born under the Blue Nose Union Jack, is a good thing to behold. But also the fact that he is so behind Derek McInnes and wants the man to succeed is inspiring.
Think about all those times where prospective Rangers managers would undermine the current one by borderline sitting in the stands watching as things were going very, very badly for the current incumbent. We only have to look, of course, at Michael Beale’s disgusting conduct of hanging about in the stands while Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers time was seriously struggling.
Rangers fans vividly remember just how poor the man’s conduct was by hanging around in the directors’ stand while Van Bronckhorst was being crucified in the dugout, before Beale then swooped in and took over right after Giovanni and Rangers parted company. That is the sort of toxic support and toxic conduct which very much does not support Rangers and very much is all about oneself.
Gerrard does not like that. He does not want to impinge on Derek McInnes, and he is on his side big time. He wants to see Rangers succeed. As we have said earlier, Gerrard would only consider himself a Plan B if things had gone wrong with Rangers, and he doesn’t want to be that.
He does not want to be what Rangers resort to if things have gone wrong. Gerrard doesn’t want things to go wrong in the first place. He is big time behind McInnes, as are we all, because we all want a winning Rangers.
The international break, of course, has been incredibly long and has taken so much focus from Rangers fans away from the club in the sense that Scotland and all other national teams have become the primary interest. All Rangers supporters want to see is their club playing, their club winning and the club doing well. And in all fairness, many of our players on international duty have done that.
But the simple fact is that Gerrard coming back into the picture and offering Steven Gerrard Rangers verdict so heavily has shown just how much Rangers fans and the Rangers community at large have missed our club.
Ibrox Noise was in favour of the international break in some senses. We wanted to see Derek McInnes being able to process a little bit of time to himself and decompress after such a huge week or two of outstanding success, especially against Celtic. But at the same time, has momentum been in any way hit by this?
Time will tell when action resumes in around about seven or eight days. But for now, it’s pleasant, if not inspiring outright, to see Gerrard very much on the McInnes train and very much wanting to see our club do well.
Steven Gerrard Rangers verdict? He will always be one of us.
