The Clarets’ relegation was confirmed with a 1-0 loss to Manchester City, which led to Scott Parker’s departure as head coach.

The Lancashire outfit have placed Mike Jackson in charge on an interim basis, but the search is ongoing for Parker’s permanent replacement.

One of the names linked with the vacancy is Steven Gerrard, who is currently out of work after departing Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in January 2025.

The former England international has previously managed Rangers and Aston Villa, and could now be set for a return to management.

Here we look at all the latest news surrounding Gerrard’s potential move to Burnley

It has been reported by Alan Nixon that Burnley face competition from Rangers in the race to appoint Gerrard as their next head coach.

It’s believed that the Glasgow outfit are considering an approach to bring the former midfielder back to Ibrox for a second stint in charge.

He led the Scottish giants to their first league title in a decade in 2021, earning him plenty of plaudits.

While Danny Rohl is currently in charge at Rangers, it’s understood that a move to bring Gerrard back is being considered after the team’s title hopes faltered with poor results in recent weeks.

It was reported in April that Gerrard was a contender to replace Roy Hodgson at Bristol City to become their next permanent head coach.

However, it has since been claimed by Football Insider that the Robins have narrowed down their shortlist to Michael Skubala and John Mousinho.

While it’s believed that Gerrard is still in the frame for the position, the fact he’s fallen down the pecking order will come as a boost to Burnley in their bid to appoint the 45-year-old.

But it has also been reported that Skubala intends to remain at Lincoln City, which could complicate matters further, as it remains to be seen whether Mousinho would be willing to make the switch to Ashton Gate from Portsmouth.

Gerrard has hinted that his future will be ironed out within the next two or three weeks amid speculation of a return to management.

The former Aston Villa boss was speaking at a press conference for an All Star Legends match between Liverpool and Man United that will take place on 3 October.

He suggested that he will know for certain what his role will be at the event in two or three weeks, hinting that a decision on his future will be arrived at by then.

“It's a fantastic event in a couple of months' time,” said Gerrard, via the Daily Record.

“I'm hoping to be available to come over to be a part of it.

“I should have a decision in two, three weeks"

Current Wales boss Craig Bellamy was linked with the managerial vacancy at Burnley following their relegation to the Championship.

However, it’s been reported by journalist Alex Crook that the 46-year-old now intends to remain in charge of the national team.

This has narrowed down the list of potential alternatives to Gerrard at Turf Moor, putting further pressure on chairman Alan Pace to secure his appointment ahead of Rangers.
