Stewart Donald replied to Juan Sartori on social media after Sunderland’s comeback at Everton kept European hopes alive, Sunderland Echo reports.
Régis Le Bris’ side trailed at half-time, then Brian Brobbey, Enzo Le Fée and Wilson Isidor scored after the break on Merseyside. The result keeps them in the hunt going into the Premier League’s final day.
Sartori attended Hill Dickinson Stadium with his daughter Sasha and posted a celebratory photo. He praised the team’s late fight and called it one to remember.
Donald replied on Facebook that maybe Europe is possible and that he was pleased for Sartori, adding hopes to catch up soon. He included flexed-arm and OK hand emojis reflecting the mood.
The exchange stands out given their shared past. Donald led the 2018 purchase from Ellis Short after relegation to League One, with Sartori joining alongside Charlie Methven.
Donald later sold his majority as Kyril Louis-Dreyfus became chairman and majority shareholder in 2021, while Sartori stayed involved. He has spanned the League One years, promotion, Wembley play-off success and now a first season back in the Premier League.
Both figures have faced criticism from sections of the fanbase for the League One era, including events seen in Sunderland ’Til I Die. The present contrast is stark, with Chelsea visiting on the final day and Europe still on.
Sunderland must win and hope other results align, with Brentford playing Liverpool and Brighton facing Manchester United.
