Ellyes Skhiri chatted to PwC Players Talk about the first few moments after full time against Hamburg, and his new role in defence.

Ellyes, the team and Albert Riera formed a circle for a long time after the final whistle. What was his message?“Simply to stick together. It’s a tough situation, a difficult period, for us and the fans. We have to stand up for each other and keep our heads up. We still have two games left and we’ve got to fight until the end.”

What went through your mind when you heard whistles from the fans?“It’s obviously not easy for us. But we understand the criticism because it’s justified. But that doesn’t change the fact that we’re pursuing a shared objective.”

Hamburg appeared to deal with expectations better, or was that not the case? “For us, it’s about positive pressure because we’re fighting for a very attractive objective, which is to play in Europe next season. But it’s also clear that this isn’t enough. We have to do more and play with greater passion. Hamburg did exactly that and that’s why they came out on top in the end.” Albert Riera fielded you at centre-back for a third time. How are you finding that?“As a midfielder by trade, it’s not my favourite position. But the coach needs me in defence so I’m doing my best to do what the role requires. Everyone wants to play as much as possible, so the position isn’t the most important thing. I’m happy with it, especially as I’m still in the middle, just one row further back. But fundamentally, nothing’s changed: you have to stay focused and win your tackles. I think I can play well at centre-back too.”

You face Dortmund on Friday before hosting Stuttgart at Deutsche Bank Park on the final day of the season. Where do you see your chances?“Unfortunately, we experienced first-hand against Hamburg that your league position doesn’t determine the result of the game. It could just as easily go the other way. Regardless, the last two games aren’t just difficult, they’re extremely important. We’re facing two really strong teams, but anything is possible. We’ll work hard to be ready in Dortmund and pick up three points.”
