Serge Gnabry has undergone an impressive development at FC Bayern. After a difficult few years and long periods of criticism, the attacking player has once again become a permanent fixture under Vincent Kompany
In the summer of 2025, the DFB star was still seen as a possible sales candidate, but Munich made a conscious decision to take a different path and extended his contract early until 2028 in February – at a reduced salary, but with clear sporting prospects
Gnabry is currently repaying this trust impressively, having already scored 20 points in 34 competitive games, making him one of the most productive players in the squad – behind Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz
The key to his upturn in form lies primarily in his changed role, as the limited availability of Jamal Musiala has seen Gnabry increasingly move into the center and often play as a ten-man or hanging midfielder
This adaptation has visibly changed his game. Gnabry is no longer just an enforcer, but increasingly also a link player between midfield and attack. His change of position makes him difficult for opponents to pin down
Coach Vincent Kompany also sees Gnabry as a decisive factor: „In terms of talent and quality, there is very little difference to the other lads we have up front,“ explained the Belgian
Another assessment is particularly noteworthy: Gnabry is „one of the most underrated“ in the Bayern squad, while Kompany also emphasized his importance to the team – both on the pitch and in the dressing room
It is also noticeable that Gnabry is not only convincing in attack, he also works much more intensively against the ball, actively participates in pressing and thus provides additional stability
His current role is therefore very different to previous years. In the 2019/20 treble season, he was primarily in demand as a goalscorer – today he presents himself as a complete attacking player with strategic influence

Another factor is the harmony with Harry Kane, with both players interpreting their roles flexibly, repeatedly moving to different positions and thus creating space for themselves and their teammates
Gnabry combines efficiency with team-oriented play – a mixture that currently makes him indispensable
His balanced record of goals and assists underlines the change: Gnabry is no longer just a finisher, but a central component in Munich’s attacking system
With his current form, he has finally made a comeback – and it’s hard to imagine FC Bayern’s game without him at the moment.
