Sunderland have issued an update after cancelling 65 tickets for the recent Tyne-Wear derby, acknowledging some fans were caught up through no fault of their own. The club said in a statement that the move followed concerns raised by supporter groups.

At the time, the club cancelled tickets bought by a supporter in breach of away ticketing rules, and returned them to sale.

A subsequent investigation found multiple unauthorised uses of supporter accounts, in some cases without the account holders’ knowledge. It also identified tickets being passed to people other than the eligible purchaser. More than 50% of some group purchases were affected, misuse has been acknowledged and appropriate action taken.

The club recognises the disappointment felt by those blameless supporters. It will now work with the ticketing supporter sub group to review and improve processes.

The aim is to ensure away tickets are distributed fairly and only to genuine supporters. The update was shared with the Red and White Army after fans sought clarity.
