Sunderland can secure a valuable prize-money uplift when they host Chelsea at the Stadium of Light next Sunday afternoon.
Sunderland Echo notes that European football remains a long shot for Regis Le Bris and his players, but a final-day win could push them up the table and increase their Premier League payout.
The Black Cats have made a memorable return, beating Chelsea and Bournemouth, completing a historic league double and extending a strong recent record against Newcastle United.
Several heavyweights have been checked on Wearside, with Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Aston Villa all leaving without maximum points.
Based on current standings, merit payments rise by position, from first at £53.1m and second at £50.4m to 20th at £2.6m, with 12th listed as £23.8m.
In addition, last season every club received £29.8m from domestic broadcasting and £59.2m from international income, so Sunday offers Sunderland a chance to add to their overall pot via league placing.
