Sunderland have unveiled a bespoke trio of 2026/27 hummel goalkeeper kits honouring club great Jimmy Montgomery.
According to Sunderland Echo, the home shirt recalls his iconic Wembley display in the 1973 win over Leeds United, echoing the green and red he wore. Montgomery remains Sunderland’s record appearance holder with 627.
His signature sits at the back of the neck on all three shirts, and the away option is yellow with the signature motif repeated across the fabric.
The third strip is orange, carrying the club’s old ship crest, with 627 subtly repeated in a darker shade.
All three are on sale online and in club stores, priced at £65 for adult short-sleeve, £70 for adult long-sleeve, £50 for junior short-sleeve and £55 for junior long-sleeve.
Chief Commercial Officer Scott McCubbin said Montgomery is woven into the club’s fabric and that the collection both honours his achievements and underlines the standards expected of future goalkeepers. He added that they wanted the launch to reflect the weight of that legacy and believe it does.
The release forms part of wider recognition of Montgomery’s contribution. The West Stand was renamed The Jimmy Montgomery stand before the 2025/26 season, and a new statue is planned for the end of Legend’s Way in early 2027, with Bob Stokoe’s statue to be moved alongside.
