In a club statement, Sunderland offered condolences to his family, friends and everyone at Newcastle United, adding that his impact on the game will not be forgotten.

His family announced on Monday that Keegan had been battling cancer and was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments. They thanked his medical team and asked for privacy.

Newcastle United said they were devastated and hailed him as one of the most iconic and influential figures in their history. The club spoke of the hope and pride he inspired and said they would consider a lasting tribute in due course.
