Sunderland have paid tribute to Newcastle United icon Kevin Keegan, who has died aged 75.
The club said in a statement that he was a towering figure in English and North East football, and it sent condolences to his family, friends and everyone at Newcastle United.
A two-time Ballon d’Or winner as a player, Keegan became one of the region’s most influential figures. After starring at St James’ Park, he returned as manager in 1992 and lifted a struggling second-tier side into Premier League title contention.
He had been living with cancer and died surrounded by his wife and daughters. Thanks were extended to his medical team, and a request was made for privacy at a deeply difficult time.
In a club tribute, his impact on and off the pitch was underlined, with praise for the quality, belief and pride he brought to the team and city. Sympathy was extended to his wife Jean and relatives, and a lasting commemoration will be considered in due course.
