Sunderland have sold a majority stake in their women’s team to US multi-club group Bay Collective, with the deal subject to football authorities’ approval. According to Sunderland Echo, the agreement follows almost a year of negotiations.
Backed by US investment firm Sixth Street, Bay Collective focuses on building women’s football clubs. Sunderland become the second club in its portfolio, alongside Bay FC.
Sunderland will retain a minority share, which the club says safeguards identity, values and intellectual property. The women’s team will continue to operate from the Academy of Light and be run in partnership with the wider club.
Interim chief executive Tom Burwell called it a significant step and said several options were explored before selecting Bay Collective for its global expertise and long-term commitment. He said the agreement forms part of the club’s global investment plan and includes critical infrastructure upgrades.
Bay Collective set out a long-term partnership to support players, staff and the Academy with enhanced resources, infrastructure and training models tailored to women athletes, while strengthening links with fans.
A joint statement outlined a focus on strengthening the squad, performance environments and operations to enable sustainable growth.
Sunderland are eighth in WSL 2 with two games left, and further investment is seen as key to bridging the gap and supporting hopes of reaching the Super League.
