Sunderland are set for a seven-figure boost this summer, with a record 12 players at the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada.

According to Sunderland Echo, the club will benefit from FIFA’s expanded Club Benefit Programme. Around €350 million will be distributed, including €100 million for qualifying, and in Sunderland’s case regulars such as Noah Sadiki, Granit Xhaka and Omar Alderete have already brought in close to €20,000.

A further €250 million covers the tournament itself. FIFA estimates €5,000 per day per player, so three weeks’ duty would be roughly €105,000 each and around £940,000 in total for Sunderland, with group-stage participation and preparation time guaranteed.

The expanded format, with 48 entrants in the group stage, is likely to trim individual shares compared with Qatar 2022. Even so, the Black Cats have strong representation: Xhaka is with Switzerland, Alderete Paraguay, Diarra Senegal, Angulo Ecuador, Sadiki and Arthur Masuaku DR Congo, Chemsdine Talbi Morocco, Simon Adingra Ivory Coast, Robin Roefs, Brian Brobbey and Lutsharel Geertruida the Netherlands, and Wilson Isidor Haiti.

Talbi came off the bench in Morocco’s 1-1 draw with Brazil over the weekend, Adingra was unused in Ivory Coast’s 1-0 win over Ecuador, and Brobbey was a late substitute in the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw with Japan on Sunday night. Paraguay lost heavily to the USA and Haiti were edged by Scotland, while others have started solidly.

The overall payout should almost certainly top £1,000,000 once qualification sums and any extended stays are included. The top two teams in each group qualify automatically, with the eight best third-placed finishers also progressing, while Diarra’s Senegal face France on Tuesday and DR Congo open against Portugal on Wednesday.
