According to NY Times, Sunderland are set to sign free agent Thomas Meunier after he left Lille, with the 34-year-old right-back poised to agree a two-year deal.
He arrived in Newcastle on Tuesday morning for a medical and is expected to put pen to paper shortly.
Meunier was in Belgium’s squad at this summer’s World Cup, playing three times before they went out to Spain in the quarter-finals.
He has 83 caps since his 2013 debut and was part of the side that reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals.
He left Lille this summer after two years, making 81 appearances with four goals and four assists, and featured 35 times in all competitions last season.
He joined the Ligue 1 club from Trabzonspor, having earlier spent four years at Borussia Dortmund and four at Paris Saint-Germain, winning three Ligue 1 titles with the latter.
Sunderland finished seventh in the Premier League last season to qualify for Europe, a year after promotion from the Championship. Captain Granit Xhaka drew interest from Chelsea earlier this summer, with an £8 million offer rejected. After talks, Xhaka committed his future and is expected to stay this summer.
