Sunderland have exercised Simon Moore’s one-year option, keeping the 36-year-old goalkeeper on Wearside beyond this summer amid repeated praise for his influence inside the camp.

His deal had been due to expire on 30 June 2026, with a 12-month extension available. Sunderland Echo understands the clause was activated some time ago, so Moore is set to stay for at least another year.

Moore joined in June 2024 on a two-year contract when the Black Cats were in the Championship. He made his first league appearance against Oxford United in October 2024, covering for the injured Anthony Patterson.

He clocked four league outings before Patterson’s return, plus two in the cups, and has not featured this season. Moore is working towards his coaching badges, with support at the Academy of Light.

That department includes 23-year-old Robin Roefs and 22-year-old Melker Ellborg, with Moore viewed as a steadying presence. Roefs has spoken of how Moore helped him settle after arriving from the Netherlands.

Luke O’Nien has described Moore as an unsung hero of Sunderland’s recent success. After missing much of pre-season with a shoulder injury sustained in the play-off final win over Sheffield United, O’Nien said he used Moore’s example while waiting for his chance and even keeps the keeper’s shirt in his locker. He added that Moore played around four games last season with three clean sheets and only two conceded, calling him a crucial cog in promotion.
