Bara Sapoko Ndiaye has only been part of the FC Bayern squad since the beginning of the year—and is suddenly on the verge of taking the biggest step of his young career. Even in his home country, hardly anyone had expected this moment.
The 18-year-old midfielder was surprisingly named to Senegal’s final World Cup roster. This makes Ndiaye one of the biggest surprises of the entire squad announcement process—not just in terms of his home country, but among all teams participating in the 2026 World Cup.
Yet just a few weeks ago, the young Bayern pro was known only to insiders. Trained at several West African academies, such as the Rise Academy and Gambinos Stars Africa, he didn’t make the move to Munich until early 2026. Ndiaye initially arrived on loan, but a long-term stay is considered a formality.
Vincent Kompany paved the way for his move to the professional ranks. Despite his lack of experience at the highest level, the Bayern coach quickly gave the youngster his first opportunities to play. Four appearances in the second half of the season were enough to put Ndiaye on the radar of the Senegalese national team in the first place.
In Senegal itself, there was initially widespread astonishment at the nomination by national team coach Pape Thiaw. The website AfricaFootUnited called it the “biggest surprise in years” and described the midfielder’s rise as “meteoric.” Critical voices were also heard: The website seneweb.com stated that the call-up had “raised questions.”
Ndiaye was initially considered a classic prospect and even a candidate for cut: “Many observers expected him to be one of the two players cut before the deadline,” wrote the news portal NDAR-Info. In the friendly against the U.S., the 18-year-old completely turned those expectations on their head. Despite the 2-3 loss, he impressed observers and the coaching staff alike.

NDAR-Info subsequently described him as an “exceptional talent” and praised his “impressive performance.” He “immediately stepped up to fill the gap left by the absent starters and demonstrated his class from his very first touch of the ball,” the report continued. Afrik-Foot also highlighted his attacking style and technical skill.
Convinced of his potential and personality, Thiaw ultimately decided to name Ndiaye to the final roster for the 2026 World Cup. Tonight, Senegal will face the star-studded French team. For the young Bayern Munich pro, this marks the culmination so far of a spectacular rise—from an unknown talent to a World Cup participant in just a few months.
