Real Sociedad face Athletic Club in the Euskal Herria Txapela at Anoeta on Friday at 19:00, the first Spanish meeting between Pellegrino Matarazzo and Edin Terzic. Played during the international break and outside the league, the derby is unlikely to lack edge.

According to AS, the contest acts as a warm-up for the official derbies, with the first at San Mamés on 31 October or 1 November, and the return on matchday 34 on 1 or 2 May 2027.

The coaches previously crossed paths five times in Germany, with Edin Terzic winning four while in charge of Borussia Dortmund. The first came against Pellegrino Matarazzo’s VfB Stuttgart, the next three versus his TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. The most recent Bundesliga meeting, however, went to the current txuri-urdin coach.

Matarazzo has praised Terzic as a fine coach and a good person, noting regular conversations when their sides met in Germany. He added that they also met for lunch while both were out of work. He said Terzic was going to have a positive impact in LaLiga.

The international window strips Real Sociedad of nine call-ups, Mikel Oyarzabal, Jon Martín, Luka Sucic, Orri Óskarsson, Take Kubo, Job Ochieng, Jon Aramburu, Yangel Herrera and Mamadou Sarr, with Zubeldia still nursing issues. Real Sociedad B also play a league match on Sunday against Granada. Athletic will be without Nico Williams, Aymeric Laporte and Unai Simón with Spain, plus Padilla with Mexico, and their goalkeepers for this match will be Santos and Simón García.
