FLW asks ChatGPT to rank the 10 most grumpy fanbases in the second-tier

FLW have asked ChatGPT to rank the top ten ‘most grumpy’ EFL Championship fanbases.

The second-tier is obviously well renowned for the sheer passion of its supporters, and perhaps every fanbase feels as though their support is the grumpiest for different reasons.

Given the fact that it would be very biased for someone to do it themselves, FLW decided to ask AI to also give a reason why a fanbase is ranked in that particular position - whether that's accurate or not is for you to decide.

It's worth a reminder that this is not an 'all-time' list, but out of the teams competing in the 25/26 season. This list can definitely spark debate though, and it features the likes of Millwall, Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County.

Kicking off the top ten is Birmingham City, with ChatGPT selecting Blues due to the apparent unease that often surrounds St Andrew's.

Despite the massive wave of optimism following the takeover by Knighthead Capital and the high-profile involvement of Tom Brady, AI suggests that expectations have now skyrocketed - which is hard to argue with really, but that doesn't necessarily mean grumpy.

Bluenoses are also described as being quick to voice concerns about direction if the team isn't dominating.

9 ? ? Stoke City

Next up are the Potters. Stoke City fans are labelled by AI as "gritty" but frustrated, with the reasoning here revolving around the club not being in the Premier League since 17/18.

Since falling out of the top-flight, Stoke have largely drifted in the bottom half of the Championship, and AI claims that fans are grumpy about "dull tactics or lack of ambition."

In all fairness, 25/26 has been somewhat of an exception so far, but Stoke’s highest league finish since relegation has been 14th. Seven years of poor football is definitely enough to make you grumpy.

At number eight, we find West Bromwich Albion. AI highlights the "high expectations" at The Hawthorns, stating that years spent yo-yoing near the Premier League have created a standard that the current reality doesn't always meet.

With the amount of stick under pressure Ryan Mason has been getting from Baggies fans, there was every chance ChatGPT could've placed them higher.

7 ? ? Derby County

Derby County come in at seventh. AI describes the Rams' support as "loyal but often pessimistic." The reasoning points to the emotional rollercoaster of administration and the two seasons spent in League One.

Whilst there's nothing to necessarily be grumpy about this season, there was strangely nothing said by ChatGPT about Derby being the worst side in Premier League history - which would make any fanbase grumpy for years.

Portsmouth fans are incredibly vocal, and when that volume is directed at the referee or their own manager, it is deafening - which is why ChatGPT ranks them sixth.

AI talks about Pompey's "yearning for better days", which is why it suggests when things aren't going well, the noise at Fratton Park turns into a collective groan.

5 ? ? Queens Park Rangers

Into the top five, and it is Queens Park Rangers.

ChatGPT puts this ranking down to "inconsistent performances and drama off the pitch". AI also suggests there is a "nothing ever goes right" mentality among the R's faithful.

4 ? ? Sheffield Wednesday

Although it’s not exactly a list to be that proud of, just missing out on the top three are Sheffield Wednesday.

Quite obviously, AI points to the fan base with "big expectations" and Dejphon Chansiri. Wednesdayites have had legitimate reasons to be the grumpiest in the league for years, and this ranking backs that, although ChatGPT still thinks the disgraced Thai businessman still owns the club.

So, their grumpiness is actually an anger at how Chansiri had run the club, and maybe some people would've thought they'd be number one.

3 ? ? Norwich City

Fans of other clubs might be surprised, but taking the bronze medal for grumpiness is Norwich City.

AI mentions that it's down to being a "yo-yo club." It describes Carrow Road as having regular frustration when things don't go perfectly, probably from their expectation to dominate like in previous years.

Because Norwich fans know what success looks like at this level, ChatGPT says they just hate being mediocre.

The runner-up spot goes to Millwall, with AI noting that the Lions are "long known" for being passionate and aren’t shy about voicing their opinions. ChatGPT argues that the "fiery atmosphere" at The Den spills over into complaining all the time, which is probably something Millwall fans would be proud of.

Perhaps the 'grumpiness' here is actually a demand for effort, where if the team lacks effort, the noise from the stands lets them know about it.

It’s basically just intense scrutiny that AI reads as grumpiness, so it’s not exactly the most realistic ranking.

1 ? ? Leicester City

Topping the table as the most grumpy fanbase in the Championship - according to AI - is Leicester City.

Following relegation, ChatGPT suggests many Foxes fans are quick to grumble about every slight - from refereeing to ownership decisions. Their standards apparently still feel Premier League-level, which is why ChatGPT says Leicester fans have no patience.

AI also makes the point that a squad worth hundreds of millions shouldn't be drawing away at a mid-table side, which is a bit of a stretch. Anybody who has watched the second tier knows that you're not guaranteed a win at all, no matter what team is playing who.

But, ChatGPT does say there's lots of frustration between where the fans think the club belongs and where they are. Seeing as though it's been ten years since the Foxes won the Premier League, Leicester supporters perhaps have every right to be the grumpiest in the league.
