THE COMMON DENOMINATOR

In 2018, when Sporting failed to qualify for the Champions League on the final matchday after an unexpected defeat to Marítimo on the road, the Verde e Brancos were in crisis. Three years later, when that same Sporting side won the Portuguese league title for the first time in 19 years, even the fans could hardly believe it. The man who led them there was Rúben Amorim. Just over a month ago, AC Milan also missed out on Champions League qualification. It was a painful disappointment, one that the Rossoneri's new Portuguese head coach is well equipped to understand and move beyond. Amorim's first steps at Sporting were anything but simple. A former Benfica star during his time as a player, he was now taking charge of the Eagles' fiercest rivals... Sporting.

That potentially delicate situation was settled where it mattered most: on the pitch. Much of Rúben Amorim's mental resilience comes from his mother, Anabela, who raised him alongside his older brother Mauro. She has been a constant and loving presence throughout his life. The human element lies at the heart of Amorim's coaching philosophy. For him, players are people first and foremost. Understanding the person comes before tactics, technique, or anything that happens on the pitch. Two clubs have already paid significant fees to appoint Amorim, even at the start of his career: Sporting paid 10 million euros to Braga in 2020, and four years later, in 2024, Manchester United paid the same amount to Sporting. Now his focus is entirely on AC Milan. His intensity and determination will have just one common denominator: the Rossoneri colours.
