Manchester City’s midfield remains a work in progress. Bernardo Silva has left City and is now a Real Madrid player. There are doubts over the futures of Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders. Neither player has set the world alight since signing for City. Rodri is 29 and only has a year remaining on his current contract. Manchester City’s eagerness to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest is well documented. Negotiations continue between the two clubs over a deal that will see City sign Anderson. Now it has been reported that Manchester City are pushing to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle. Manchester City’s eagerness to significantly improve their midfield is now clear to see.
Daniel Taylor has reported for The Athletic that Manchester City are considering a summer move for Sandro Tonali. Furthermore, Taylor reports that Tottenham Hotspur are also eager to sign Tonali from Newcastle this summer. Taylor adds that Tottenham have held productive talks with Tonali’s camp. It is also reported that Manchester City’s interest in signing Sandro Tonali doesn’t influence their plans to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. City are looking at significantly improving their midfield this summer and if they are successful in signing Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali they could be set to spend well over £200 million to sign both midfielders.
Manchester City have clearly identified an area of their squad that they must improve this summer. That is their midfield. City have signed Tijjani Reijnders and Nico Gonzalez over the past 18 months. Nico Gonzalez has shown glimpses of his quality at City. However, he did fall out of favour towards the back end of the 2025-26 season. Tijjani Reijnders did struggle to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League in his first season at City. Often, Reijnders spent too much time on the periphery of matches. Factor in Bernardo Silva’s departure and it is clear to see why Manchester City are looking to heavily invest in their midfield this summer.
Manchester City are clearly looking to address these concerns this summer. If they were to sign both Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali this summer, their midfield would be significantly improved. Both players would add quality, tenacity and class to City’s midfield. They are both elite Premier League proven midfielders that would significantly alter the makeup of City’s midfield. It now remains to be seen if City can sign both players this summer.
Manchester City are in the race, alongside Tottenham, to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer. City’s transfer plans are now clear and they are determined to significantly alter and improve their midfield. It is one area of the pitch that City must add more quality to and they are aiming to do exactly that.
