Football League World ranks the most dangerous attacking double acts in the third tier

Attack has been the name of the game so far this season in League One, with numerous five-goal hauls already and at least half the league netting over 1.5 goals per game.

The best sides, no matter the league, have numerous ways they can hurt you going forward, and in League One, that's no different.

There are plenty of attacking duos in the third tier who opposition defences don't like facing, whether they be a strike partnership who can both get on the scoresheet, or a striker/number 10 combo linking up to perfection.

But who in League One has the best? Football League World has had a look to find out.

Bearing in mind this isn't a list detailing striker depth, both of these players should be set to play at the same time. Additionally, for those duos who have been created just this summer, it takes into account the potential when those two combine.

That being said, here are the top seven attacking double acts in League One.

7 ? ? Sam Nombe and Aaron Collins - MK Dons

Kicking off the list is one of the new duos, as Sam Nombe returns to the club he came through the academy to partner with Aaron Collins, who, despite not having as much of an impact as many expected in League Two last year, assures goals in League One.

The Welshman has had double-digit goal campaigns in the third tier in each of his last three seasons at the level, and began this season with four goals in his first five outings.

The 29-year-old has gotten off to a brilliant start, and it should only be a matter of time before Nombe joins him in the goals. The former Rotherham United man has also scored in the double digits in his last three campaigns at the level, including 12 for the relegated Millers last season.

It's not started to tick just yet for Paul Warne's side, but you feel that, once it does, these two will be profiting with plenty of goals.

6 ? ? Jamal Lowe and Callum Slattery - Sheffield Wednesday

There were legitimate question marks surrounding Jamal Lowe heading into this season after a couple of poor campaigns for Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship, but he's already put those to bed in the early stages.

The 32-year-old has averaged over one expected goal per game through the first five matches in League One this season, and is benefiting from some real creative players behind him in the midfield.

Arguably the best of those midfielders is Callum Slattery, who was one of Wednesday's marquee signings this summer, joining the League One side from Motherwell off the back of a career year in terms of goal contributions in the SPL.

The former Southampton academy man is the main chance creator behind the striker, but can also find the back of the net himself. His one assist so far this season was for Lowe, and you can imagine that will be the first of many.

5 ? ? Bim Pepple and Will Evans - Plymouth Argyle

The forward duo of Bim Pepple and Lorent Tolaj would have easily topped this list last season, with both combining for 34 goals and landing in the top five of the Golden Boot race.

Plymouth Argyle had to reluctantly bid farewell to Tolaj, but were able to keep the 16-goal Canadian frontman and have seemingly promoted him to the main focal point of the attack, with Will Evans being brought in from Mansfield Town to partner him up top.

Evans was one of the biggest underperformers of his expected goals last season, netting eight from 13.58 xG, but if he can replicate that and get the rub of the green, he could easily return to being a double-digit frontman.

Meanwhile, Pepple has had a bit of a low-key start to the 2026/27 campaign, but still has a couple of goals to his name in all competitions. Given the rate at which he was finding the back of the net last year, it may only take one going in before they all start to flow.

4 ? ? Jack Marriott and George Earthy - Reading

There isn't a more dangerous striker in this division when fit than Jack Marriott, so you could probably pair him with any of the supporting cast at Reading to create a dynamic duo.

Lewis Wing did contribute double-digit goals and assists last season, but as someone who operates in the engine room rather than as a traditional number 10, it didn't feel right to include him here.

Therefore, I've landed on new arrival George Earthy, who has put in some very promising performances in the infancy of his Reading career after signing from West Ham United.

The main issue with Leam Richardson's side last season was that Marriott was shouldering too much of the attacking load. Now, he has plenty of strong attacking players around him and in reserve too, in case he gets injured.

With a box-crashing attacking midfielder behind him, the Royals could be a very dangerous attacking prospect this season.

3 ? ? Joe Taylor and Ashley Fletcher - Huddersfield Town

There are too many feathers on the attacking bow at Huddersfield Town currently. If this was a trio's list, then Joe Taylor, Ashley Fletcher and Derensili Sanches Fernandes would be at the top.

And if you want to include Fernandes in place of either of these two, then I wouldn't hold it against you, but in terms of pure strike partnerships, Taylor behind Fletcher has to be one of the best you can get on paper.

Taylor's the early frontrunner for the Golden Boot this season, with the Terriers having finally unlocked the striker they signed for £3 million 18 months ago after seemingly performing well anywhere but at Huddersfield.

And while, as of writing, it's not clicked in front of goal just yet for Fletcher, his hold-up and link play is crucial to allowing the likes of Taylor and Fernandes to get chances of their own.

Once the 30-year-old does start scoring, though, and we all know he will, that frontline will be even more dangerous at the Accu Stadium.

2 ? ? Nahki Wells and Kasey Palmer - Luton Town

As of writing, Nahki Wells and Callum Marshall are alternating between starts at Luton Town. In the meantime, though, having Kasey Palmer behind either of them isn't a bad alternative.

Wells has started more games thus far, and given his storied EFL career, the 36-year-old gets the nod over the young Northern Irishman. It was a weird debut year last year for the former Bristol City man, who underperformed his expected goals by a whopping eight.

This season, though, he's seemingly taken the lid off and has come close to equaling his tally in over 30 fewer games, and we're likely to see the seasoned Championship goalscorer explode in front of goal in 2026/27.

Then, we have Palmer, who could stake a claim to being one of the best players in the division, especially after the impact he's made at Kenilworth Road so far.

The 29-year-old never played in anything lower than the Championship before his initial loan move in January, and showed why, netting eight in the final 11 games of last season and bagging a brace on opening day against Reading.

Like Huddersfield, it's another side with plenty of attacking quality across the board, but these two stand out as two of the best in the division.

But taking the top spot on the list of dynamic duos are a Stockport County pair who have played together for over two years now and have gotten better and better each year.

Kyle Wootton is one of the most complete strikers in League One, being dangerous in front of goal and a great target option for a long ball. His hold-up play, like Fletcher's, helps his two 10s get on the ball and cause damage.

Harry Wood has settled into life at Stockport well, but you get the feeling that, after showing glimpses of quality under Dave Challinor in the last couple of years, Jack Diamond is starting to play his best football under Jimmy McNulty.

The Hatters could be unstoppable going forward if Diamond's quick start to the campaign can continue, as Stockport will be dangerous playing through the third with the ball at feet and running at defences, but will also have that aerial threat provided by Wootton.

It's frightening to think about, and the reason why they're the best attacking duo in the division.
