Josh Windass kept Wrexham on course for the play-offs, his strike sealing a 1-0 win at Oxford United that lifted them above Hull City on goal difference after Hull drew 2-2 at now-relegated Leicester City.

NY Times notes the question, whether Windass can emulate father Dean, who volleyed Hull to victory over Bristol City in the 2007-08 play-off final at Wembley and took them into the Premier League.

Sam Smith controlled a long pass and set up his partner. From 25 yards, Windass drilled first time past Jamie Cumming. He was withdrawn three minutes into stoppage time to chants of "Windass again, ole ole".

He called promotion to the Premier League a childhood dream, but stressed there is a long way to go and the immediate aim is to reach the play-offs. True to habit, he prefers to watch goals back and look for the next one.

The winner was his fifth in five starts, though he argues it should be six after a Stoke corner was credited as an Olimpico to the wing-back. He has 14 league goals, or 15 if Wrexham’s EFL appeal succeeds, from an xG of 7.8.

Two league games remain, away to champions Coventry City then home to Middlesbrough, while Hull face in-form Norwich City on the final day. Whatever follows, Wrexham’s first season back at this level in 43 years has yielded a highest league position, they cannot finish lower than ninth, and they lead Wales for the first time in 25 years.
