Real Madrid are once again at the centre of European debate following their Champions League exit, but this time, the harshest reaction has come from Germany in the aftermath of their defeat to Bayern Munich.

While much of the focus has been on the controversial moments during the game, a scathing report published by Die Welt has taken things a step further. 

The article, written by sports editor Sven Flohr, delivers a direct and unfiltered critique of Madrid’s behaviour, both during the closing stages of the match and after the final whistle at the Allianz Arena.

The journalist does not hold back as he questions the mentality and reactions of the Madrid players following their elimination. 

In his view, the club, once known for its dominance and class, is now showing a different image when things go against them.

“Real Madrid suffer defeat in Munich and, as is often the case, blame the referee. Who else? 

“Conspiracy theories have long been part of the DNA of a club that has been losing respect and decency for years”

The criticism intensifies, shifting focus from the immediate result to what the journalist describes as a recurring pattern in Madrid’s conduct. 

Flohr suggests that the inability to accept defeat gracefully is becoming a defining trait.

“The club that was once so proud, great and exemplary, and which has been losing dignity and respect for years. 

“According to them, the blame for the defeat lay not with their own performance, but with the referee. As is often the case with Madrid. 

“The Spaniards’ anger should also be directed at Camavinga, who should have refrained by all means from such antics.”

Attacking the players

The article goes further, directly addressing the behaviour of Madrid players in the final minutes of the game, where tensions were visibly high. 

According to Flohr, these reactions reflect deeper issues within the club’s culture.

“The fact that his teammates saw things differently may also be because unsportsmanlike behaviour, intimidation of the referee and tales of backstabbing have long been part of Real Madrid’s DNA.”
