We were impressed by Andrey Santos on Tuesday night, and over the season he’s established himself as a solid squad option. But the sporting directors have promised more experience and quality in this team, and midfield is one are they will need to do that.

On the London is Blue podcast, Matt Law pointed out that Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez will miss the start of the season post-World Cup, and Chelsea need to be prepared for that.

Midfield quality needed to take pressure off regular pair

“I think there will be a new midfielder,” Law said.

“You can’t talk about needing “ready made players” and “experience” and then think that if Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo aren’t going to play that you’re going to entrust the first two months of your season to Andrey Santos.

“You would have to have a ready made midfielder coming in to at least play next to [Santos]. I think the midfield signing has to be one of the really ready made ones.”
