Thierry Henry’s first job in management came at Monaco in October 2018, when he replaced Leonardo Jardim. Three months later, after only four wins, he was dismissed and Jardim returned to the dugout.

According to L'Équipe, it proved a false start that suggested he was not yet ready to coach.

Henry was 41 that autumn. He had ended his playing career four years earlier to become a star pundit with Sky Sports on a six-year deal estimated at €5m a year.

Alongside television work, the former France and Arsenal striker trained for the job, completing his UEFA Pro licence in January 2018.

By then he had spent 18 months as one of Roberto Martinez’s assistants with the Belgium national team.
