Thierry Rendall has offered a stark assessment of Valencia CF after an injury-hit spell that began with a 12 million euro move from Sporting de Portugal in 2019. Across seven seasons only two met expectations, with brighter spells under Javi Gracia, José Bordalás and a phase with Gattuso, and he turned 27 this month. An 11-month lay-off and a missed pre-season were followed by a hamstring setback as he regained fitness.

"Not having a clear objective was a mistake from the start." He said the defeat to Oviedo "was a turning point when the season started to become unstable", he told Flashcore.

"With Baraja things were not going well and sometimes, with a change of air and methods, you can change the mentality. That is what the coach has achieved."

"This year we had more difficulties, I do not think we reached our full potential. We lost our identity, we were a bit lost in some matches and that hurt us."

"Valencia CF is a very unstable club. There is a toxic environment between the fans and the board. Whether we like it or not, that is harmful and I think the blame is also ours."

"It is an incredible feeling to always have more than 40,000 people in the stadium."

"After my first injury at Valencia, they labelled me made of glass and this affected me psychologically. There were moments when I should not have played, but because of the label I ended up forcing myself."
