Thomas Meunier has joined Sunderland as their first signing of the summer on a free after leaving Lille. The 34-year-old right-back arrives following Belgium’s run to the World Cup last 16.
Belgium exited after a 2-1 defeat to Spain. He became a free agent earlier this month.
Sunderland’s surprise Europa League qualification helped sway him, and he brings Champions League and Europa League experience from spells with Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Lille. He has agreed a two-year deal.
"I am hugely excited and honoured to join Sunderland. I'm very happy to be here and to begin this new chapter in my career. The Premier League is one of the most competitive and exciting leagues in the world, and it's a challenge I've wanted to experience. When I spoke with the club, I was impressed by the ambition, the project and the desire to keep moving forward. Competing in Europe was also a big factor in my decision because, as a player, you always want to test yourself against the best teams and compete for trophies." He told the club website.
For head coach Regis Le Bris, a suggested strongest XI could be: GK Robin Roefs, RB Thomas Meunier, LB Trai Hume, CBs Dan Ballard and Omar Alderete, CMs Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra, LW Enzo Le Fee, RW Chemsdine Talbi, ST Brian Brobbey.
