Has Thomas Tuchel now proved to be inspired?

The England manager having made these comments only five weeks ago, though it feels so much longer.

Towards the end of May, Thomas Tuchel naming his latest England squad for the matches against Andorra and Senegal in June.

However, a major surprise that Tino Livramento wasn’t also included, as he’d had a great season with United, as well as having been involved with the senior England side.

When quizzed on having left certain young players out of the senior squad for the June 2025 matches, Thomas Tuchel explained that for the likes of Tino Livramento, Jarell Quansah and Liam Delap, he had decided that with a ‘major tournament (Under 21 Euros)’ coming up; “I like the idea a lot that they become leaders in that group.”

Thomas Tuchel’s belief that Tino Livramento could get far more out of participation in this tournament, rather than part of the senior England squad against Andorra and Senegal…

As it happened, June 2025 was a bit of a shambles for the England senior squad and Tino Livramento arguably lucky not to have been involved, especially as no doubt he would only have got very limited minutes from the bench, at best. England fortunate to win only 1-0 against minnows Andorra in a World Cup group qualifier, then a shocking friendly defeat to Senegal at Wembley.

Late June and Tino Livramento (and Eddie Howe!) must be so pleased that Thomas Tuchel made that decision last month.

The likes of Tino Livramento and Jarell Quansah (Liam Delap ended up signing for Chelsea and going to the FIFA Club World Cup instead) part of a group of key players who have led England Under 21s to retain their Euros crown they won back in 2023. Saturday night seeing an excellent final full of drama, as England defeated Germany 3-2 in Bratislava.

Not that Tino Livramento will have been short of confidence and belief after Newcastle United’s great season of Cup glory and Champions League qualification, but this extra boost of adding an Under 21 Euros medal to his growing collection won’t have done any harm whatsoever.
