Tite has admitted he erred over Brazil’s penalty order against Croatia at the 2022 World Cup, and said he cried after the quarter-final exit.
He broke a long silence last week with his first exclusive interview in more than three and a half years. According to Globo.com, he spoke calmly about the defeat and his decisions.
He accepted criticism for not letting Neymar take the first penalty, calling it a mistake. He added that it would not necessarily have guaranteed victory, but Neymar should have gone first.
Tite said the game misled him. On review he felt Brazil were superior and Croatia created no major danger, yet the equaliser arrived four minutes from the end of extra time.
For the first time he detailed the last of his 81 games in charge, including heading straight to the dressing room after the final kick rather than sharing the immediate pain with his players. He also set out his tactical calls and the choice of takers, plus the final exchanges inside.
He pointed to positives too, notably a 30-match unbeaten run in World Cup qualifying that he thinks will be hard to surpass. He said that record led every successor to seek him out, and that he has spoken with Fernando Diniz, Dorival Júnior and Carlo Ancelotti.
The three-hour interview will be published in two parts, with the first focusing on the national team. The second, due on Monday, covers recent spells at Flamengo and Cruzeiro, refusals of Corinthians and his plans for the future.
