Sunderland’s interim CEO Tom Burwell hailed supporters after the club sealed a landmark return to European competition.

Sunderland Echo reports that Régis Le Bris’ side finished seventh after a final day 2-1 win over Club World Cup champions Chelsea at the Stadium of Light, with other results also favouring them. The campaign delivered Europa League football for the first time in 53 years, completing a four-year rise from League One to Europe.

Burwell praised the 49,000 crowd, describing them as the decisive 12th man. He noted it was a second win over Chelsea this season and said there were heroes on the pitch, in the stands and around the world, insisting Sunderland are now marching into Europe.

Back in the top flight via the Championship play-offs, Sunderland had been widely tipped for a relegation battle. Instead they secured a place in continental competition. Emotional scenes followed at full-time as players, staff, supporters and members of the ownership group celebrated.

A year on from their dramatic Wembley victory over Sheffield United, Le Bris said the achievement shows anything is possible, while urging humility ahead of a busier schedule next season. He added that the club’s structure offers a platform to keep progressing and he would not set firm limits or targets.
