Tony Bloom struck an upbeat note on Albion’s new season during a family day at Brighton Racecourse’s Brighton Bullet.

After the sale of Danny Welbeck to Chelsea, Bloom said: “Everything is coming together. Danny is a big loss. He has been a brilliant player for the club over the last six years but we have got a lot of really good young forwards and we are confident for the season ahead and in Europe for the second time.” He was speaking to At The Races TV.

He attended the Brighton Bullet, staged in memory of his grandfather, which closed the venue’s annual August festival. Runners compete over six furlongs for The Harry Bloom Memorial "Brighton Bullet" Handicap trophy.

The 7/4 favourite Marcellinus finished strongly to win, with Bloom’s 4/1 hope The Quiet Gent two lengths back in second under David Probert, edging Ten Bob Tommy for the place by a head.

It came amid a busy spell for Bloom’s football interests. He has already watched Royale Union St Gilloise lift the Belgian Super Cup, while his Scottish investment Hearts lost 6-1 at Benfica in a Europa League tie on Thursday. Hearts now move into the Conference League, where Albion are almost certain to play Tromso in the play-off round.
