Tottenham Hotspur striker Dominic Solanke led the line as England took on Uruguay in a friendly match in preparation for the 2026 World Cup last night.
Solanke got the nod in the absence of Harry Kane, but failed to impress England manager Thomas Tuchel in a 1-1 draw.
He was the focal point in Tuchel’s 4-2-3-1 set-up, eight years and 133 days since his England debut.
The Spurs ace was the only England player to muster a shot in the first 45 minutes, nutmegging a Uruguayan player before firing at goal.
Unfortunately, it was mostly a subdued outing for Solanke, who has been in terrific form for Tottenham in 2026, before he was substituted for Dominic Calvert-Lewin after 56 minutes.
He did not grab the opportunity to establish himself as Kane’s back-up at the 2026 World Cup with this performance.
The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope gave Solanke a 4.5/10 rating, saying he ‘has to do more on such a big night’.
Solanke did not make much of an impact in a match that demanded he up his game, the story of his time at Tottenham.
His lack of impact, rampant injuries and the possible loss of Randal Kolo Muani and Richarlison will likely force Spurs into the market for a new striker this summer.
The Tottenham frontline is crying out for a lethal marksman that can fire the club back into the upper echelons of the Premier League.
Solanke’s tally of six goals this season does not move the needle, and Spurs will be looking to pounce on a good market opportunity to sign a striker.
