US president Donald Trump said he had congratulated Spain on having a great team and insisted he had no tension with anyone after the World Cup final. He spoke to reporters at Andrews air base near Washington DC. According to Superdeporte, his comments came as he returned to the White House.

Spain beat Argentina 1-0 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to claim a second world title after 2010. Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino handed the trophy to captain Rodrigo Hernández. He then stayed with the group while players waited for him to leave the frame, remaining on the far right of the victory photo despite Infantino’s attempts to move him away.

Trump said both sides played well, adding that Spain looked the better team and seemed to be on top. He also described it as a very even match and said it was great.

His denial of tensions followed months of criticism over Madrid’s refusal to raise defence spending to 5% of GDP. Earlier this month he said Spain had redeemed itself completely after supposedly agreeing to numerous payments to NATO.

Trump also claimed the tournament’s celebrations were unlike anything before, probably in terms of events and certainly in football. He said it was four times bigger than any previous FIFA edition, adding that some had told him it might be five times, without setting out the yardstick.
