Barcelona made an aggressive start to their summer transfer window, bringing in Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon in a blockbuster €80m move that took almost everyone by surprise. Yet things look set to slow down for Sporting Director Deco, despite his desire to do as much as possible before the World Cup.
The Gordon deal was completed within days of Barcelona’s final league game, as they stepped in ahead of Bayern Munich to complete the deal. Their next target appears to be a number nine signing, while there is also talk that they could bring in a defender, although that now seems to be on the backburner until one of their current defenders leaves.
Barcelona’s interest in Julian Alvarez has been public knowledge for some time, and as early as this time last year, he was cited as their preferred target to replace Robert Lewandowski. Yet Atletico’s reluctance to sell means any deal will be difficult. A large part of Barcelona’s chances of completing a deal would appear to hinge on his willingness to push for a move, but Sport say that Alvarez will now consider his future after the World Cup, rather than before, as he focuses on Argentina duty.
It looked as if Bernardo Silva would also be sorting out his living arrangements in Spain this summer, with first Atletico Madrid making a strong play for his services. Yet Barcelona have also agreed terms with Silva, and he is attracted by the idea of playing for the Catalan side. Hansi Flick has given the green light for the deal, but only if players exit the squad first. As such, this has delayed any possibility of Barcelona pulling the trigger on a deal, and subsequently, Silva has decided to delay his decision until after the World Cup too.
