Marc-Andre ter Stegen has recently opted for surgery, a decision which has caused a lot of chatter at Barcelona, especially after the goalkeeper himself put out a three-month timeline for his return.

In order for Barcelona to utilise his salary to register new players, Ter Stegen must be out for a minimum of four months, as per La Liga rules.

But despite Ter Stegen’s announcement, Barcelona are confident that the German will remain out for four months, at the very least.

Why Barcelona are confident

A recent report from Mundo Deportivo has laid out two reasons why Barcelona are confident that Ter Stegen’s absence will be much longer.

First, the surgery Ter Stegen is undergoing tomorrow in Bordeaux, to be performed by Dr. Amelie Leglise, is a response to a relapse.

The 33-year-old had surgery for a herniated disc in late 2023 and has experienced recurring lumbar pain since then, which has prevented him from taking part in preseason training since July 14.

The second reason revolves around the specific demands of the goalkeeping position, which usually requires a lot of reflexes and agility.

Barça’s medical team argues that goalkeepers place repeated stress on their lower back through diving and recovery movements, which could significantly slow down Ter Stegen’s post-surgery rehabilitation.

Barcelona, regardless, are very disappointed with the way Ter Stegen announced the exact duration of his absence. In fact, the relationship between the two parties has reached a breaking point.

The club believe it was an immature move from the German international, who is obviously frustrated after being told to leave the club in light of Joan Garcia’s arrival at the club.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how soon Barcelona finalise a medical report and confirm the exact duration of Ter Stegen’s absence.
