Egypt missed the mark at the U20 World Cup, whose final phase is still underway in Chile.
The “Pharaohs” are on the verge of elimination from the race for a spot in the round of 16, after suffering two defeats against Japan (0-2) and New Zealand (1-2) respectively.
To discuss this Egyptian fiasco at the U20 World Cup, Foot Africa spoke to Egyptian journalist from Zamalek TV, Nabil Amir Sadek, who had this to say.
The Egyptian squad was not properly prepared for this event, settling for friendly matches against relatively weak opponents. Moreover, head coach Osama Nabih made questionable choices in the 21-man squad selected for the tournament, particularly in defense, which turned out to be the national team's weak link in this World Cup.The lack of cohesion among the players was evident during the two matches against Japan and New Zealand, and the primary responsibility lies with coach Osama Nabih, who failed to implement a well-oiled tactical system. He also chose to sacrifice the first matchday against Japan to focus everything on the second matchday against New Zealand, but his calculations ultimately proved incorrect. It must also be admitted that Egyptian football is no longer producing top-quality players as it did in the last two decades. Even the two giants, Al Ahly and Zamalek, no longer invest in youth development and prefer to recruit competitive foreign players. Finally, the players based abroad did not deliver the expected boost, mainly due to the lack of cohesion and tactical shortcomings.
The North African team now needs a miracle to qualify for the round of 16 at the U20 World Cup. First, they must defeat Chile in their next match by at least a two-goal margin, then hope for a favorable set of circumstances that would allow them to finish the group stage in second or even third place.
