UEFA has fined Athletic €10,000 for overdue debts in the 2025-26 season. As reported by as.com, the Bilbao club is one of seven teams punished by the Club Financial Control Body.
UEFA opened proceedings over late payments owed to other clubs, employees, or tax and social authorities. Athletic's case arose from the Padilla deal, involving his move to Pumas for €400,000 and an earlier than agreed return for €300,000 after Agirrezabala left for Valencia, a sequence that sparked a compensation dispute with the Mexican side.
The issue was resolved promptly, lifting FIFA's threat of a three-window registration ban. UEFA has now delivered an appealable decision, though any challenge would entail a lengthy process.
Elsewhere, the heaviest fines were issued to Cluj and Ballkani, both €200,000. Budućnost Podgorica were fined €95,000, Ordabasy Shymkent €75,000 and Sarajevo €20,000.
The most severe sanction hit Dinamo Batumi of Georgia, who are excluded from the next UEFA competition they qualify for in the next three seasons from 2026-27. The CFCB Appeals Chamber has ratified that decision, which can still be challenged at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Four of the punished clubs also face suspended exclusions from European competition due to aggravating factors such as repeat offences or debts overdue by more than 90 days. For Cluj and Ballkani, exclusion will apply if they record late payments in 2026-27 and 2027-28.
For Athletic, the punishment is purely financial and the most lenient in this round.
