UEFA knock back Real Madrid dossier against Barcelona

Earlier this week, Real Madrid continued their call for action to be taken against Barcelona over the Negreira case by submitting a dossier to UEFA, in which they asked for the European football governing body to strip titles earned during the period in which payments were made to former Technical Committee of Referees vice-president Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira.

Ever since news of Barcelona’s past relations with Negreira came to light three years ago, Real Madrid have been determined to seek punishment for their arch rivals. Recently re-elected Florentino Perez has been leading their push, and he was the one to sent the dossier to UEFA in the days after he won the presidential vote.

However, it has now been reported by Sport that UEFA will not take any action against Barcelona – at least for now. The dossier is considered to be valid, with the governing body unable to do anything until the Spanish authorities make their judgement.

The Spanish Prosecutor’s Office has been investigating Barcelona for well over a year, but until now, there has been no final judgement in sight. Several charges that were initially brought have since been discarded, although the allegations centred on sporting corruption – which Real Madrid have accused the Catalans of – is still being looked into.

Over the last three years, Barcelona have maintained that they did nothing wrong. They made clear that the payments for Negreira went towards receiving reports on referees, although that is still yet to be confirmed by the Prosecutor’s Office.

While the wait goes on for a resolution, Barcelona have already started hitting back at Real Madrid and Perez. Earlier in the week, they confirmed that they are seeking legal action against the Bernabeu chief, whose comments on the Negreira case have not been welcomed at the Spotify Camp Nou.
