Unai Emery drew level with the greats as Aston Villa beat Freiburg 3-0 in Wednesday’s Europa League final, sealing his fifth major European trophy with a third different club.
According to L'Équipe, only Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho and Giovanni Trapattoni had previously reached five titles in major European competitions.
All five of Emery’s crowns are in the Europa League, three with Sevilla in 2014, 2015 and 2016, then Villarreal in 2021 before this Villa success. That haul makes him the competition’s most successful manager.
Ancelotti’s five have all come in the Champions League, two with AC Milan in 2003 and 2007 and three with Real Madrid in 2014, 2022 and 2024.
Mourinho’s collection includes two Champions Leagues, with Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010, two Europa Leagues in 2003 with Porto and 2017 with Manchester United, and the 2022 Europa Conference League with Roma. The Portuguese has won all five finals he has contested.
Trapattoni’s record features one Champions League in 1985 with Juventus Turin, three UEFA Cups in 1977, 1990 and 1993, and one European trophy in 1984 with Juventus Turin.
