Former Köln coach Ståle Solbakken nominated Sander Tangvik (HSV), Julian Ryerson (Borussia Dortmund) and Antonio Nusa (RB Leipzig) for Norway's first World Cup since 1998. The latter two were expected to make the squad, but Tangvik's inclusion was far from straightforward.
The 23-year-old shot-stopper, who saved a penalty-kick in his HSV debut against Bayer Leverkusen, gets the nod after Mathias Dyngeland was injured and the nationality switch by Nikita Haikin got rejected by FIFA. Tangvik also has a record of five penalty saves from 11 during his Eliteserien career.
Ryerson will be expected to play a crucial role in Norway's campaign after registering 15 Bundesliga assists this season. The profiles of their strikers could make the set-piece specialist more dangerous in the final third. Nusa also had a strong season with RB Leipzig as Ole Werner's men will be back in the Champions League next season.
Despite his lack of gametime at Sevilla, former Ingolstadt and RB Leipzig goalkeeper Orjan Nyland is expected to be the number one. Similarly, Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund), Leo Ostigard (Hoffenheim), Morten Thorsby (Union Berlin), Alexander Sorloth (RB Leipzig) and Jens Petter Hauge (Eintracht Frankfurt) are players from Norway's squad with past Bundesliga experience.
The announcement was unique as it was delivered with a pre-recorded video by the Norwegian monarch, King Harald. Norway will start their campaign against Iraq before facing Senegal and France in a tricky group.
