United in Pole Position for Summerville as Roma Exit Race and Wages Revealed

Manchester United have emerged as the frontrunner to sign Crysencio Summerville (24) after AS Roma ruled themselves out of the race, with Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport reporting that the Dutch winger is seeking to triple his current salary – a figure INEOS can accommodate far more readily than the Giallorossi.

Summerville currently earns less than €2 million per season after tax at West Ham, and is targeting approximately €6 million per season at his next club. Roma could not get close to that number, which has effectively handed United a clear run at personal terms. West Ham, relegated to the Championship last season, are under significant financial pressure to sell key assets this summer, as covered here in detail – and Summerville, contracted until 2029 with an option for a further year, sits near the top of that list.

United’s position in the Summerville pursuit

United’s interest in Summerville was confirmed earlier this week, arriving alongside a parallel pursuit of his West Ham teammate Mateus Fernandes – a deal Stretty News reported on last month. The Reds’ analysts have been impressed by Summerville’s underlying numbers, and his profile – a direct, left-footed wide attacker capable of operating out wide or centrally – addresses a gap in Michael Carrick’s squad that has been open since the summer window began.

United initially pivoted away from left-wing recruitment after Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu impressed under Carrick, with INEOS shifting focus toward a left-back addition. That avenue stalled – deals for both Nathaniel Brown and Lewis Hall fizzled out – and the club has now swung back toward the wide forward market. Summerville’s availability, and Roma’s exit, has sharpened United’s interest considerably.

With Roma out and no obvious Premier League rival having declared a firm bid, United’s negotiating position on personal terms is strong. Whether any other suitors remain credible at this wage level is unclear, but the competitive picture has thinned materially.

The wage picture and the fee obstacle

Summerville’s £45,000-per-week current salary – per Capology – is modest by Premier League standards, and the ask of roughly three times that figure lands somewhere in the £130,000–£135,000-per-week range. That sits comfortably within United’s wage structure for a first-team wide player, and INEOS should encounter no serious difficulty agreeing personal terms if a transfer fee can be settled.

Alas, that fee remains the harder problem. West Ham are holding firm at £50 million, a significant premium over the £25 million they paid Leeds United for Summerville last summer. Talk of a possible combined deal for Summerville and Fernandes has circulated, with a package in the £120–130 million range floated in some quarters – though no formal bid from United has been reported at this stage. Marcus Rashford’s potential departure could free up funds and wage space to facilitate a move.

What happens next

United have been tracking West Ham’s relegated squad closely, and Summerville represents arguably the most impactful name on that list. West Ham’s need to sell is not going away; the question now is whether United table a formal opening bid and whether the Hammers show any willingness to move from their £50 million valuation once it becomes clear the continental market cannot match either the fee or the wages.

It remains to be seen whether United push quickly to capitalise on their pole position, or whether West Ham’s asking price forces a prolonged negotiation that invites other clubs back into the picture.
