Celtic Interim Chairman Brian Wilson today looked back at the club’s Double-winning season, addressing some of the ‘rubbish’ which has been seen and heard from certain quarters in recent weeks.
With the SPFL today sanctioning Celtic after events around the Club’s title-winning end to the campaign, Brian Wilson tackled this matter and others as he challenged the narrative which has developed.
While understanding that the SPFL was required to undertake its own processes and reach its own conclusions while the club kept its counsel, Celtic’s Interim Chairman has now set the record straight on a number of issues.
In an interview with Celtic TV, Brian Wilson said: “We took a conscious decision in the immediate aftermath of the season, and the Hearts game in particular, not to join in exchanges of words with anyone.
“We were celebrating winning a Double and we were not going to get bogged down in what actually was an absurd series of debates about issues which didn't really exist, and one by one they've been chalked off.
“It was all rubbish and yet people who should have known better, or people with axes to grind who couldn't quite conceal them, made this into a running narrative until it ran out of steam.
“And at the end of the day, what matters is we won a Double. We won it in great style. And none of these issues that were turned into great mountains of artificial controversy held any water whatsoever.”
Brian Wilson also welcomed today’s appointment of Martin O’Neill as Manager, stressing that the club will be doing all it can to support Martin across the summer as we seek to deliver more success to our fans.
“I think, like every supporter in their heart of hearts, I'm really pleased that Martin's going to continue the journey," he said.
“It's the outcome we wanted, it's the outcome we've got, and just building on the success of last year, the inspiration he gave, the leadership he gave, and then to have a full season ahead to bring all that to another level.
“It's really exciting for supporters and a very well-earned tribute to Martin that we wanted him and he wanted to come back to continue that journey. So we’re absolutely delighted.”
