Vasco have shifted approach, prioritising a foreign head coach, with Botafogo’s Franclim Carvalho the leading target. According to Globo.com, president Pedrinho’s tenure had previously brought in only Brazilian bosses.

His appointments were Rafael Paiva, Fábio Carille, Fernando Diniz and, most recently, Renato Gaúcho, dismissed on 18 June. When Pedrinho took charge of the SAF, Álvaro Pacheco was in post under 777 Partners, but lasted 30 days with three defeats and one draw.

After Renato’s exit, a shortlist largely of overseas candidates was drawn up, reflecting a belief the domestic market lacks options and a need to reset the dressing room.

Vasco want stronger man-management, especially with the eight foreign players in the squad. Friction followed Renato’s remarks about Colombians and Ecuadorians struggling to adapt, cited when he was asked about Marino Hinestroza’s poor form.

Vasco Matos was consulted, but talks stalled after a court ruling removed Pedrinho from the SAF leadership. Vitor Matos, now at Swansea City, was also discussed.

Marcelo Gallardo and Hernán Crespo were considered, but neither discussion progressed, with Gallardo understood to be taking a sabbatical and Crespo negotiating with Al-Sadd in Qatar.

Talks with Franclim were helped by links to Admar Lopes, but slowed when Lopes was removed in a court action led by 777 Carioca on Tuesday.

He and his family already live in Rio de Janeiro, whereas other foreign options are abroad and would need at least a week of bureaucracy before starting.
