According to Sainstmarching.com, VfB Stuttgart are reportedly targeting Southampton midfielder Caspar Jander this summer.
Jander joined the south coast club for £10.5 million in August 2025 and has made 31 Championship appearances, scoring twice. His strike at Charlton Athletic capped one of Southampton's best team moves of the season.
He was on the books at Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 before breaking into MSV Duisburg's first team at 18. After three seasons in the German third tier he moved to 2. Bundesliga with Nürnberg, sharing the division with fellow Saints recruits Joshua Quarshie and Damion Downs.
In 2024/25 he started 32 of 34 league games, scoring three and supplying nine assists. A Germany Under-21 international, he faced England at last summer's European Championship and took home a runners-up medal.
At Southampton he faces strong competition from Cameron Bragg, Shea Charles, Flynn Downes and under-21 prospect Barnaby Williams. Some suggest he would not be greatly missed if he left, given the depth. Yet his worth is in defensive transitions, pressing and harrying, traits that could suit the Bundesliga's pace, comparable to the Premier League.
Stuttgart are fourth and virtually assured of European football, occupying the final Champions League place. They will hope to qualify again after missing out this season.
Their 2024/25 Champions League campaign yielded 10 points and a near-miss for the knockouts, with a 1-0 win at Juventus probably the highlight of the league phase.
A return home and the chance of Champions League football may be difficult for Jander to resist, even if Southampton are promoted. And if the Saints are back at English football's top table next year, there is no guarantee he would feature.
