Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala took a monumental step towards getting himself back into rhythm with his first goal of the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign last night. The 23-year-old German footballing ‘ultra phenom’ has had to wait 10 long months between Bundesliga tallies. An important step has now been taken.

Musiala’s first goal since a horror injury at the summer Club World Cup ushered in a long spell on the sidelines didn’t come from open play. Fortunately for the English-educated German international, there was a chance to take advantage of the fact that his partial countryman was out with injury. 

Harry Kane remains Bayern’s undisputed penalty taker. That shall remain the case over the course of the rest of the season, particularly in light of the fact that Kane presently chases Robert Lewandowski’s single season Bundesliga scoring record.

So long as Kane is fit, the England national team captain is Bayern’s man from the spot. The fact that Kane picked up a calf injury this week nevertheless meant that a rare opportunity presented itself last night. Musiala took advantage.

Vincent Kompany explains Jamal Musiala’s take

FCB head coach Vincent Kompany – asked by a Bayerische Rundfunk reporter how matters worked in Kane’s absence – spoke on the matter at last night’s press conference. Kompany explained, unsurprisingly, that his team didn’t possess a “Plan B” when it came to matches without Kane.

The German journalist wishes to know if, beneath Kane, there existed some sort of line or hierarchy with respect to penalties. Kompany provided the answer one might expect. He and his staff have had no real time to contemplate life without Kane. 

“Plenty of our lads are capable of taking on this role,” Kompany said. “In this case, I simply left it down to a ‘gut feeling’. Jamal, being one of many who could have utilized this moment. Joshua Kimmich and Tom Bischof can also take penalties effectively.

“In this moment, it simply all came down to a ‘gut feeling’,” Kompany continued. “Jamal simply had a hunch.“
