After winning the double, FC Bayern should be in a state of calm. Instead, questions of power and public discussions continue to dominate the headlines around the Säbener Straße. Now TV legend Marcel Reif has voiced clear criticism of Uli Hoeneß
The debate has once again been triggered by the statements made by Bayern’s honorary president regarding the future of sporting director Max Eberl. Hoeneß recently publicly put the chances of the 52-year-old’s contract being extended at „60 to 40“ and at the same time stated that there were still doubts about Eberl
These statements continue to cause discussion – now also with Marcel Reif
On BILD‘ s „Reif ist live“ program, the long-standing TV commentator was critical of the Bayern patron’s recent appearances „I don’t know what he wants to achieve with this,“ explained Reif with regard to Hoeneß‘ public statements
The 75-year-old also questioned the effect of the communication: „He hasn’t gotten any younger and when people get older, some develop in one direction, some in the other,“ said Reif
The former Sky commentator then became even clearer: „Sometimes he’s a bit too dogged and too stubborn in his dealings with the outside world. That’s a matter of taste. He’s old enough, he’ll know what he’s doing.“
Despite his criticism, however, Reif does not believe that Hoeneß acted rashly. Rather, he suspects a clear strategy behind the interview

„What we must and should assume is that he will have conducted such an interview, which is proofread before it appears, because he knows exactly when it will appear and what effect it can have,“ explained Reif
For the TV expert, it is therefore obvious that Hoeneß deliberately wanted to send a signal with his statements – especially with a view to the upcoming summer transfer window. „Perhaps he was also sending a certain warning to Eberl, especially now ahead of the summer transfer window,“ Reif speculated
In fact, Max Eberl is facing a summer that will point the way forward. FC Bayern would like to strengthen the squad in certain areas, but at the same time remain financially stable
There have been repeated internal discussions about expensive transfers and costly contract extensions in particular, and Bayern bosses apparently expect clear transfer revenue in order to be able to finance new signings
The task facing Eberl is therefore clear: to remain competitive in sporting terms, but at the same time work in an economically convincing manner
The public debate is likely to increase the pressure on the sporting director in the coming weeks.
