Wayne Rooney said he hopes Pep Guardiola stays at Manchester City calling him a key figure for the Premier League.

Rooney praises Guardiola’s impact

Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has shared his views on the future of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney said he would like Guardiola to remain in charge beyond the current season. He explained that Guardiola has set level that other managers now try to reach making him important for the league as whole.

Guardiola has been City manager since 2016 and has led the club to six Premier League title, with a strong chance of adding seventh this season.

Despite that success, uncertainty remains over whether he will continue next year.

Guardiola’s future still unclear

Rooney noted that opinions inside squad can differ when it comes to manager’s future. He said some players may want Guardiola to leave while others hope he stays, often depending on playing time.

Still Rooney stressed that the Premier League benefits from having top coaches. He said Guardiola has set clear standard over the past decade and believes the league is stronger when the best managers are involved.

Kompany named as possible successor

Rooney also spoke about who could replace Guardiola if he decides to step down. He suggested Vincent Kompany, now head coach of Bayern Munich as a strong option.

According to Rooney, Kompany knows Manchester City well and has shown similar ideas in his coaching work. He added that Guardiola would likely play a role in choosing his successor as he sees himself as mentor and would want to leave the club in a good place.
