Champions League Round of 16 will close out on Wednesday, with games fans shouldn’t be missing out on.
The game is tied 1-1 on aggregateNewcastle thought they had a win wrapped up in the first leg, when they hosted Barça in St. James’ Park. Harvey Barnes scored in the 86th minute and they thought it was enough to hang on.
Unfortunately for them, they conceded a penalty during essentially the last kick of the game. Lamine Yamal made no mistake burying it, and now, Newcastle have a very tough task away at Camp Nou.
Can Newcastle cause an upset in Spain? It seems unlikely at this point. Barça have the advantage at home. In the week where they are celebrating Joan Laporta’s win in the elections, spirits are high and they will most likely get the result they need.
Bayern lead 6-1 on aggregateBefore the first leg, some thought Atalanta could cause trouble for Bayern. After all, this is a team that reached the Round of 16 after smashing Dortmund 4-1 at home.
However, the first leg wasn’t even a contest. Atalanta played at home but suffered a humiliating 6-1 defeat, and this tie looks all but over. Harry Kane didn’t even play for Bayern.
Bayern, however, are facing goalkeeping troubles before this game due to injuries. They might be reduced to fielding Leonard Prescott, a 16-year-old German-American, in goal. Regardless, that still doesn’t seem enough for Atalanta to do a miraculous comeback.
Galatasaray lead 1-0 on aggregateIs a classic Champions League upset on the cards? Playing Galatasaray away in Istanbul is never easy; there is a reason people call their stadium “hell.” Liverpool discovered that twice this season.
Now at Anfield, this is a make or break moment for the club. They are fifth in the Premier League, and crashed out of the EFL Cup early. So the only places to win silverware this season is in the Champions League and the FA Cup. This needs to be treated like a final.
As good as Galatasaray are at home, they do seem weak in away games. They were very fortunate against Juventus where they lost 3-0 in regulation, and got away with Juve wasting a golden chance in extra time. If they replicate that performance on Wednesday, then it would be an easy win for Liverpool.
Atléti lead 5-2 on aggregateYou should never field a young, inexperienced goalkeeper in a crucial Champions League game. Igor Tudor found out the hard way last week with Antonín Kinský.
Fortunately, Tudor took him out after 15 minutes with 3-0 down. Tottenham did concede two more after that, but they also scored two goals of their own. Those goals might be very valuable because they are still alive in the tie.
Let’s recall that Juventus also lost 5-2 to Galatasaray back in the playoff first leg but almost staged a comeback. They only fell short because they wasted a golden chance. So although this is a very tough challenge for Tottenham, it’s not entirely impossible for them to come back and make it through.
